Dreams by Degrees Releases Seasons Series
Catherine Lewis reports:
Apparently having spent the last year marinating in "Martha Stewart's Living,"
the San Francisco-based record label Dreams by Degrees is preparing to release a
series of ten-inches with a seasonal theme. Each release will be limited to 500
copies. The first of these releases, predictably titled Winter, was
recorded by the Provo, Utah slowcore quartet Coastal, and features three original
songs and a cover of the Cocteau Twins' "Primitive Heart." Coastal, whose
influences include Low, the American Analog Set, Slowdive, and the Red House
Painters, released their debut album on Words on Music in November 2000.
The Los Angeles duo Sappington are recording their EP, Spring, for a March
2002 release. Like Coastal's Winter EP, it will feature three original
tracks and one cover: Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game." Sappington's music calls on
influences like Slowdive and Spiritualized and features guitar melodies and
miscellaneous samples with swirling female vocals.
The third release in the series, Summer, is scheduled for a July release.
It's by Joshua Torres, which is the recording alias of Tarentel's Jefre
Cantu-Ledesma. No word yet what the Summer tracklist will be, or which
artist will record the Autumn volume of this series.
