The Promise Ring Get Major Wood

Catherine Lewis reports:
Milwaukee emo quartet the Promise Ring are all set for the April 23rd release of their fourth album, Wood/Water, their first for Epitaph imprint Anti-. The album was recorded at Jacobs Studio in Farnham, England by legendary producer Stephen Street-- in the same converted farmhouse where Street recorded the Smiths' The Queen Is Dead. Wow, that's quite a fall you took there, Steve. You okay?

This is the band's first album since their 1999 Jade Tree release Very Emergency, and also the first since singer/guitarist Davey vonBohlen was diagnosed with meningioma, a benign brain tumor, in May of 2000. Although that surgery and the complications from it halted several of the band's tour plans that year, all looks well for vonBohlen, and the Promise Ring will be hitting the road with a few U.S. dates in March-- including a stop in Austin for SXSW-- and a handful of shows in the UK in May, supporting the, uh, not-so-emo Jimmy Eat World.

In addition, the band is working on a video for the album's first single, "Stop Playing Guitar." The video will be directed by the Icelandic duo Arni + Kinski (former members of Gus Gus) in Los Angeles. Arni + Kinski's recent work includes the Sigur Rós video "Vidrar vel til Loftarasa."
