concert previews Destroyer and Frog Eyes
Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Iota, Arlington, VA

Dan Bejar is Destroyer, whose five albums to date are often lost in the shadow of his other project, a little band called the New Pornographers. Bejar's solo material reflects the solid songwriting of the Pornogs, without the danceable, pop edge. On his latest effort, Your Blues, there's even some downright bitterness as he warns, "Don't become the thing you hated" over a melody so drenched with orchestration it almost sounds major-label. This lovely over-the-top-ness will be provided live by Canadian backing (and opening) band Frog Eyesy´ On its own, the quartet conjures images of mythology and fantasy with melodramatic vocals over chaotic instrumentation, making for a performance that's sure to be as theatrical as it is musical. Destroyer plays with Frog Eyes at 8:30 p.m. at Iota Club & Cafe, 2832 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $10. (703) 522-8340. (Catherine P. Lewis)
