concert previews Faun Fables
Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Black Cat, Washington, DC

In the midst of an unrelenting folk revival, a girl can find herself longing for some rock to go with all that indie. Even the hardcore Gunne Sax crowd may find itself too awash in tweeness with Dawn McCarthy, aka Faun Fables, who self-released two albums before landing on Drag City with her latest, Family Album. McCarthy's voice takes Beth Orton's timbre to a whole new level of shrillness, but instrumented with guitars, flutes, vibraphones, and even a glockenspiel, the disc's over-the-top folkiness converges into a dreamy maelstrom of joyful yodels and tongue-twisting chants. Faun Fables plays with Raspuntina at 9:30 p.m. on the Black Cat's Mainstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $12. (202) 667-7960. (Catherine Lewis)
